The UniEnglish Self-assessment Tool

The UniEnglish Self-assessment Tool will help you to analyse your strengths and weaknesses in using the English language.

It is primarily aimed at students who want to improve their English language proficiency, but all students are strongly recommended to try it out.

Because it is a way for you to understand your English language development needs, your results do not appear in your student records and are not given to your lecturers or tutors.

You can try it for free anywhere you have access to the internet. You will need audio software for Sections 2 and 4 and a headset. If the listening section does not download correctly the first time, you may need to click on the 'unblock content' statement at the top of your screen.

It consists of four sections: use of English/reading, listening, writing and speaking. You can complete all four sections or just one or two. You can do the different sections at different times. Each section takes about 15 to 20 minutes to complete, but the writing section may take a little longer. You will receive instant online feedback on strengths and weaknesses in reading and listening. The English language proficiency team will give you feedback on your writing and speaking.

In order to access the UniEnglish Self-assessment Tool, you will need to enrol into the UniEnglish BlackBoard unit. Please send the English Language Proficiency team a request. Enrolment will be confirmed by email within two business days. Enrolment will end on December 31st of the year in which you enrolled, but you may request to be re-enrolled any time.

When you are ready to start, click on the START button below to begin. When you have finished, you can interpret your scores by downloading the Understand UniEnglish results guide [.doc 78kB] or logging into Blackboard.
